Three Ways To Beat Procrastination

1. Earmark A Specific Block Of Time For Consuming Info On The Internet

Wasting hour after hour of your valuable and irreplaceable time on activities that shouldn’t take up more than 30 minutes a day has to come to an end.

I’m talking about everything on the Web that you do to consume information – reading emails and messages, checking digg, Facebook and Twitter, reading blogs, the news – everything!

Give yourself 30 minutes to an hour each day to do nothing but enjoy it, take care of it, or however you look at it. However, once you’ve used up your allotted time, then you must not return to it at all until later in the day or evening, once you’ve accomplished all your other other tasks.

Keep these things in their place and quit letting them control your life!

You must stop checking this sort of stuff every 10 minutes. It will not only kill whatever momentum you might have built up, but chances are, the rest of the world isn’t going to sit at a standstill waiting on your next Facebook update.

2. Take Charge Of Your Inbox

Managing your email is a massive topic, to the extent that a whole book could be written on this subject (and in fact there have been – tons of them, to be precise), but it is likely that these would be the most important points:

Answer any emails that can be replied to quickly (and by quickly, I mean in less than a couple of minutes) immediately.

Keep your replies short when possible. Keep only to the salient points, and don’t get too chatty (although you must be sincere, of course). However much you dislike writing long emails, it is almost certain that the person receiving lengthy emails dislikes them even more.

If you haven’t replied to any email after a month, then delete it. Holding on to them does nothing but make you feel guilty every time you open your inbox. Guilt is an action-killer, so get rid of the old emails and get rid of the guilt!

3. Work As Disconnected As Possible

This means, close your instant messaging program, and close your office door (use a Do Not Disturb sign if necessary), and turn off your phone (you can do it, I know you can).

You have got to get momentum on your side, because once you get that ‘flow’ going, you’re able to take action much faster, with greater results.

So, when you’re working, make sure you eliminate all distractions!
